The Making Of Kennedy

For over a century and a half, the legend of Ned Kelly has captivated the world, portraying him as a modern-day Robin Hood and garnering widespread fame and support for the notorious bushranger. However, this film seeks not to glorify his crimes of murder, robbery, and theft but to shed light on the reality of the era.

Set in 1870s Australia, the story follows the love and struggles of Sergeant Michael Kennedy and his wife, Bridget Kennedy, as they navigate the challenges of colonial life. It serves as a reminder that the policemen slain by the Kelly Gang at Stringybark Creek in 1878 were not merely faceless adversaries but cherished members of their communities—fathers, husbands, and pillars of society—whose lives were tragically cut short.

Through Kennedy's perspective, the film explores the profound impact of the shootout, revealing that the loss extended beyond the three men killed that day. It delves into the ripple effects on countless other lives, challenging the entrenched narrative that has shaped Australian history for generations. Kennedy's story stands as a beacon of change, offering a fresh perspective on a pivotal moment in the nation's past.

SYNOPSIS

In 1863, Constable Michael Kennedy of the Dublin Metropolitan Police, along with his family, departs their devastated homeland for the colony of Victoria, Australia. Upon their arrival in Melbourne, Michael joins the Victorian Police Force, where he encounters the love of his life, Bridget.

Their union defies the conventions of 19th-century marriages. Bridget, inheriting her parents' business acumen and possessing a keen eye for assessing horses, alongside her musical talents, complements Michael's qualities as an upstanding, diligent, and honorable colonial police officer. Their relationship transcends mere romance, rooted in mutual respect and equality.

By 1878, stationed in the untamed expanses of North Eastern Colonial Victoria, they confront the challenges of frontier life, enduring personal losses and raising their own family. However, fate intervenes when Michael is tasked with apprehending the notorious horse thieves, the Kelly Brothers, wanted for assault and attempted murder. Alongside fellow Irish officers, they march towards Stringybark Creek, unaware of the impending tragedy.

The ambush by the heavily armed Kellys forever alters the course of history, leaving behind shattered lives and indelible consequences. As a widow with five children, Bridget's struggle extends beyond seeking justice; it becomes a battle for survival and prosperity in a harsh 19th-century world. Yet, her resilience and the resilience of her community resonate throughout Australia, shaping the nation's trajectory to this day.
